Poker players advance
3 August 06

Two valley residents will advance to the third round of the 2006 World Series of Poker this week.

Dawna Wilson and Paul Shoquist are among the 550 people who made it through the first day of round two at the Las Vegas, Nev. competition Tuesday. Bill Swenson played Wednesday, and his results were not available at press time.

“I really got lucky,” Wilson said by telephone Wednesday.

She and Shoquist played until after midnight. Wilson, who was the female chip leader for most of the day, will enter round three on Friday with $64,000 in chips while Shoquist advances with $58,000.

Jackson resident Brett McPeak busted out Tuesday, Wilson said.

When they begin playing Friday, players will have a $200 ante and blinds of $600 and $1,200.

Wilson said her success in round two came down to the first hand of the day in which she had to bet all of her chips, about $30,000 worth.

“The chip leader began bullying me immediately,” she said. “He ended up putting me all in. It was a freaky, freaky hand.”

Yet Wilson stayed in and determined the chip leader was bluffing. She doubled her chips on the hand by beating two nine cards with two Aces.

“I definitely think I can get in the money,” she said. “Once I get in the money, I am going to start playing my game. I am going to be less defensive and more offensive.”

The $10,000 buy-in Texas Hold ‘em World Championship at the Rio pits 8,000 avid poker players against each other for an estimated $11 million purse and the most prestigious award in poker, the World Series of Poker gold bracelet.

The tournament covers 13 days, with some games going well into the early morning hours.
