Poker has a new world champion
4 August 06
Since the early ‘70's, the winner of the $10,000
buy-in No Limit Texas Hold'em main event at the World Series
of Poker (WSOP) has been crowned the World Champion of Poker.
Back in the 70's, there were less than 50 players entered
in the tournament. This year, about 8,000 players will pony
up the $10,000 entry fee.
As the number of players in the WSOP main event has increased
so rapidly, the event has become somewhat of a lottery.
With so many competitors, luck plays a much bigger role
and explains why amateur players have dominated the event
for the past three years.
Everyone agrees that winning the main event is a prodigious
accomplishment. Yet, because the tournament is solely No
Limit Texas Hold'em, the winner will rarely, if ever, be
regarded as the best all-around poker player in the world.
Well, this year, a new event was added to the WSOP schedule
— a $50,000 buy-in H.O.R.S.E. tournament. The rich
buy-in alone ensured an elite field of players, and the
mixed game format guaranteed that there would be no lucky
winners.
H.O.R.S.E. is an acronym for the following mix of games:
Hold'em, Omaha Hi-Lo, Razz, Seven-Card Stud, and Eight or
better Stud. There's another unique twist to this tournament.
Once play reaches the final table, the tournament reverts
to No Limit Hold'em until a champion is crowned.
